Your Flu Friend
A flu friend can be a relative, neighbour or friend who, if you get flu, can collect medicines, food and other supplies on your behalf. This way you don't have to leave your home, so you can play your part in helping to reduce the spread of flu and have more time to rest up!
Flu friends and family should be people who live relatively close and be people you are happy to share personal health details with.
Once you have identified your flu friends and checked they are happy and able to help, you need to make sure they have everything they need.
In order to collect any prescribed medication for flu, your flu friend will need to show both your identification and theirs as well as a flu authorisation number. This authorisation number is given to you if you call the national pandemic line and are diagnosed with flu.
Proof of ID include the following:
- Utility bill.
- Passport.
- Credit or debit card.
- Driving license.
- NHS card.
Why not make a note of your GP's details as well as a shopping list of essentials you are likely to need if you do become ill.
It is important to include any prescription medication for existing health problems you take normally so you and your flu friend are prepared. Here's a list of the things you may need if you do get flu:
- Tissues.
- Thermometer.
- Non-caffeinated soft drinks.
- Healthy but easily prepared meals and snacks, such as soup and fresh fruit.
- Over the counter flu remedy such as Lemsip Max All in One Lemon OR
- Pain killers such as Nurofen Express Tablets (ibuprofen lysine) to relieve fever and headaches (or Nurofen for Children Strawberry (ibuprofen) if you have little ones).
- Something to help relieve a sore throat such as Strepsils Extra Blackcurrant Lozenges (hexylresorcinol).
- A hot water bottle.
- DVDs to keep you entertained while you rest.
- Hand sanitizer such as Dettol Healthy Touch Antibacterial Handwash.
